DefinitionThis phylum include photobactrium, which are also known as bioluminescent bacteria. These organisms have the ability to emit light. These bacteria are mostly present in sea water, marine sediment, surface of decomposing fish, and in the gut of marine animals. They can either live free or in symbiosis with another animal. The animal in which the bacteria live in provide the bacteria with a safe home and a sufficient nutrition. The bacterial bio-luminescence is caused by actin of an enzyme called bacterial luciferase, encoded by lux gene, which also expresses enzymes for substrate of the bioluminescence reaction.
